Firstly, it is necessary for you to run an anti-virus program to ensure that your computer is not infected by any virus, malware, spyware and other kinds of malicious software for those will take up large amount of Windows resources when running the computer, slowing down the computer speed.
Secondly, please go to check and then remove some unnecessary service. When installing programs on the computer, some will automatically add entries to run at windows startup. Moreover, Windows sometime will automatically start some services that do not need by average PC users, overloading the startup entries and then slowing down the computer. So to fix a slow computer, what you need to do is go to Start and then “run”, type “msconfig” to access Services. Here, you can carefully check for the programs/ services that do not need to run at starting up the computer to get faster computer speed.
Thirdly, regularly maintain the hard drive. There are many ways that you can do to maintain hard drive, but normally, you can effort form the below sides:
1) Uninstall the unwanted programs from the computer on time
2) Run the Disk Cleanup to delete the unnecessary files that are no longer used
3) Run the Error-checking timely
4) Always retain sufficient available hard disk space
5) Defragment the hard disk at scheduled time
With the simple three methods above, you can enjoy faster computer speed all the time. But from a fact study, we know that lots of PC users have never run a disk defragmenter when trying to fix a slow computer. That is not recommended for sometimes a fragmented computer had been the main cause of a slow computer.
If a computer is becoming fragmented because of the disk fragments, thought it is possible for us to read and write the files on the hard disk. But because they are scattered and then located at different places of the hard disk, it will take much longer time to reassemble them together. If we can put different parts of the same file at the same place, things will be opposite.
Considering this, Windows provides us a packaged utility to rearrange the files locating on the hard disk, making them always close together and then easier to get access to. But before running the Disk Defragmenter, it is necessary for you to run a Disk Cleanup to remove some useless files from the computer and then turn off other running programs to make sure that a smoother defragment process.
But no matter what preparation you have done before the disk defragmentation, it will still consume longer time to finish a whole defragment process because of the large hard drive capacity. Take my own experience as an example, it took more than 10 hours to defragment my E drive which is only 18 GB large. So now I prefer to use some professional defrag programs when trying to defragment my computer.
After a lot of research on defrag programs on the website, it is proved that Advanced Defrag is the on of the best defragmenter that can defragment the hard disk and the Windows registry to effectively fix a slow computer to get faster computer speed.

It is known to all that we can fix a slow computer by simply defragmenting the computer. But it is a so time-consuming process to get through the whole disk defragmentation. What makes us crazy is that, there will be lots of fragmentations coming not long after the previous defragmentation, significantly slowing down the computer. So it is necessary for us to run a disk defragmentation again and again. Thus, needless to mention how much time it takes and the inconvenience it brings, as time goes by, will greatly shorten the lifespan of the hard disk.
So is it possible for us to fix a slow computer easily by a disk defragmentation without any troubles? Of course, it is. Here, we will discuss some ways on how to avoid troubles when defragmenting the computer, that is, assign some folders to other drives expect C drive (Take D drive as an example).
1) Assign the WIN386.SWP file of Virtual Memory to D drive: go to Start-> Control Panel-> System -> Performance-> and then Virtual Memory -> select “Let me specify my own virtual memory settings”->select D drive ->Ok to finish the setting. But please note that, the drive you select must be larger than 100MB.
2) Assign the Internet temporary files to D drive. First, please create a new directory under C:\D drive such as D:\IE-TEMP, and then go to Start -> Control Panel -> double click Internet Options -> click Settings within Internet Temporary Files -> click “Remove folders” to the directory D:\IE-TEMP.
3) Assign the system temporary files to D drive. First please go to create a temp directory in the D drive, for example, D:\temp, and then right click My Computer ->Properties->Advanced->Environment Variables, drag to the end of the System Variables to find TEMP and TMP, and then change the value of them to D:\temp. By the way, it needs you to restart the computer to take effect.
4) Assign the received and draft mails of Outlook Express to D drive: first please go to create a new Outlook directory under D drive, and then run Outlook Express -> Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> click Store Folder -> select Change -> assign the new location, for example, D:\Outlook.
5) Move My Documents to D drive: first please go to create a new MyDoucuments in D drive like D:\My Documents, and then right click My Documents to select Properties, and then type D:\My Documents within the tab “Target Folder Location”.
6) If you are using some download programs like NetAnts, it is recommended that you can change the download directory to D drive. So first please go to create a new directory like D:\Download, and then change the download location to the directory to you just created.
After the modification above, it will be much faster in defragmenting the C drive and reducing the fragmentation on the computer. Thus fixs the slow computer.
But to more faster defragment the computer, besides run a disk cleanuo and an error-checking before the defragmentation, it is much better that you can close all running programs before, or boot the computer into safe mode. In this way, you can fix the slow computer effectively. But when defragmenting the computer with the windows built-in defragmenter, I find that it is really a process that test your patience more than others. But please note that the defragmentation on the computer is a main factor of the computer slowdown. First of all, please note that fragmentation is created when the hard disk is impossible to locate a complete file into the same place. At this time, the content will be cut into many parts and then saved at different places of the hard disk. If the file is used frequently by the system, it will take more time for the hard disk heads move forward and back frequently to reassemble the associated data.
