Lots of PC users will find that the available disk space on C drive is becoming slower and slower (sometimes less than 10 Megabyte) as days by. Even though a removal of some unnecessary files on C drive can solve the problem of lower disk space, please note that the files on C drive are mostly program / system files which can not be directly deleted as what you can do on other drives, for it will mess or crash the entire system when being deleted incorrectly. So how do you release more available space for C drive? Here, some tips you must know.

First of all, it is known that normally programs will be installed on C drives, which take large amount of hard disk space. So to release more available hard disk space, what you need to do first is to uninstall some unwanted programs from your computer by going to Start, Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs. Please remember not to delete the program files directly.

Secondly, clean up C drive regularly to free up hard disk space. Have you ever noticed that Microsoft provides us a utility named Disk Cleanup to manually clean up the system junk files from the computer? If no, it is time for you the use it to clean up the generating system junk files from your computer by going to My Computer, right click the C drive to select “Properties” and then press “Disk Cleanup” within “General” to begin the begin the process, then you can select the file types to be cleaned up. With this simple cleanup process, more available hard disk space will be released.

Thirdly, move some directories to other drives. By default, directories like My Documents, IE temporary files will be automatically located on C drive. So we can move them to other drives (take D drive as an example) to release disk space.
1) Move My Documents to D drives: right click My Documents to select Properties and then click “Move” under the tab “Target folder location” to select the new location, and click “Ok” to save the change.
2) Move IE temporary folder: first go to create a new directory in D drive, and then go to Start -> Control Panel -> Internet -> click Settings within Internet Temporary Files -> click “Remove folders” to the directory you just created.
3) If you prefer to download programs/ movies from the Internet, please remember to change the default directory C: Download (Downloads) to other drive.

Last, to release disk space, please disable System Restore or Hibernation for they will also take up more hard disk space. First, please right click My Computer to select Properties, System Restore and tick “Turn off System Restore”. Then, you can go to Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> click on Hibernate tab -> uncheck “Enable hibernation”, click Ok to save the settings.

With the simple tips above, you can release more available disk space for C drive. Hence, you can store what you like on the computer easily. But it is still necessary to mention here that a disk defragmentation is needed in order to maintain the hard disk for too much fragments scattered on the disk will hinder the computer to run fast as before. Once a single content is located at the same place close and contiguously, it will reduce the time to input / output it.

In conclusion, we can release disk space easily for C drive, but to more effectively maintain it, a simple disk defragmentation is necessary. If you like, you can simply click here to have a try with a very powerful defrag program
